Sublime was a band that successfully mixed punk, reggae and ska, creating a sound that was… Sublime. Sublime formed in 1988 as a punk-rock garage band, it was made up of Bradley Nowell (guitar, vocals), Eric Wilson (bass) and Bud Gaugh (percussion). The band played their first real show on July 4, 1988 at a small Long Beach club. This show started the infamous riot referred to as the Peninsula Riot. Sublime was an instant success, they began touring and quickly gathered a huge fan base, mainly the surf/skate crowd. After four years of playing nothing but live shows, Sublime recorded their first album “40 oz. to Freedom” which was released on the label that Bradley co-founded with Miguel Happoldt called Skunk Records. The LP was sold at all of their shows, but really became big when the LA based radio station KROQ began to play “Date Rape”.
Due to the exposure from KROQ, Sublime signed with RCA to release their second album called “Robbin’ the Hood” in 1994. The band toured extensively throughout 1994-1995, their popularity increasing gradually beyond the West Coast. Sublime was known as a “party band”. It was common for Sublime to show up to their own show late, and drunk.
Feeling like he needed to live up to his bands image, Bradley started using heroin. For years, Brad tried to beat the addiction, but the addiction was stronger than himself. On May 25, 1996, two weeks prior to the release of the band’s self-title album, Nowell was found dead at the Oceanview Motel in San Francisco, California due to an apparent heroin overdose. After this tragedy, Sublime was split up, for good.
After the death of the lead singer, the band went on and released their self-titled album, which was a huge success mainly the song titled “What I Got” which made is to #1 on the Modern Rock chart. Still to this day, Sublime has a huge fan base.
After the break up of Sublime, the surviving members have been in several different bands such as Long Beach Dub All Stars, Long Beach Short Bus and Del Mar. In December of 2009, rumors started circulating about how Sublime found a new singer and were getting back together. Turns out, this was not a rumor, Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson teamed up with Rome Ramirez, a 19-year-old guitarist/singer from Long Beach, CA.
At first, the guys planned on bringing back the band, keeping the name Sublime. This raised some concerns from the Nowell family. Since the name Sublime was a trademark registered to Bradley Nowell, Troy Nowell (Brad’s wife) tried to get the guys to change the name. Later on, it was agreed that the band would be called Sublime with Rome.
